What is self-drive overlanding?
Self-drive overlanding is a type of self-reliant travel that involves traveling to remote destinations with the use of a vehicle of your own or a rental. The term originated in Australia to describe the practice of driving livestock over long distances. Overlanding trips can last for months or years, and often span international boundaries. The primary form of lodging is camping, and trips can involve rough terrain, off-road trails, paved roads, dirt trails, and challenging four-wheel drive tracks.
At the heart of overlanding is a love of the great outdoors, camping culture, and exploring new places. There is also a core obsession with vehicle mechanics, customization, and building out a unique rig that suits the personality and needs of the specific overlander.
Different styles of lodging
With our self-drive overlanding safaris you have the choice of either traveling in a group of 6 to 10 vehicles and join in the camaraderie of spills and thrills during our tours. Here the level of luxury is determined by yourself whether it's a rooftop tent, caravan or tent, the choice is yours.
During our group tours we mainly make use of camping facilities while the private and custom overlanding tours will include both camping and lodge accommodation. With the latter, the degree of luxury will be determined by the client's budget.
Camping has the great advantage that you can visit remote places and spend some time there, compared to accommodation where you can only enjoy daytrips from your place of lodging.
